Yellow melon is probably the most common honey melon, which is sold in a wide range of sizes in our country. It belongs to the cucurbit family, which also includes pumpkins, cucumbers, zucchini or patissons. Due to this botanical order, melons are referred to as vegetables. The fruit of the yellow melon resembles a rugby ball in shape. The peel is relatively thick and firm, has a canary yellow color and is slightly bent. Inside the peel is hidden, the cream-colored juicy pulp. The thickness of the pulp depends on the size of the fruit, but on average it is around 4 cm. The cavity in the pulp is filled with smaller, pointed seeds placed in three slimy sacs. The pulp of a yellow watermelon is full of sweet juice at full ripeness and smells pleasant.
Yellow watermelon, like watermelon, is the perfect summer refreshment. It is therefore eaten both on its own, stripped of seeds and peel and cut into pieces, and can be combined with any, preferably color-distinctive fruit. It looks and tastes beautiful with black and red currants, raspberries or blueberries.
However, yellow melon is also used in sweet pastries, as part of appetizers and cold cream soups. It is often combined with vegetables to spice up salads and bowls. It can be used to prepare a wide range of dips, sauces and marinades, which get a sweet taste thanks to yellow melon and at the same time do not overpower the taste of meat. It can be combined with any type of meat, fish and seafood. Last but not least, hollowed out yellow melon can be used as a serving dish for a variety of desserts, fruit and vegetable salads. The firm, non-crumbling pulp of this type of melon is also excellent for making ‘edible decorations’.
Yellow melon comes from Asia, but today it is grown on almost all continents. It is imported to our country mainly from Italy and Spain, where it is one of the commonly grown crops. This fruit is rich in vitamins A, B and C, calcium and potassium. The combination of these minerals and vitamins strengthens the balance of metabolism, which is why it is suitable for diabetics. Yellow watermelon can help with sunburn. Slices of its pulp cool and nourish damaged skin. Not only because of this, it is also often used in cosmetics, its pleasant scent will make any face mask more attractive. Due to its low energy content, it is recommended in many diets, although its sugar content is much higher than that of watermelon.
Yellow watermelon hybrids with yellow flesh are also sometimes called.
