The fruits have a yellow-orange, finely streaked, smooth, glossy, and firm skin; they are round to oval in shape, about 8 cm in size, and taper toward the stem at the top. Inside, within a soft, cotton-like lining, are numerous black seeds surrounded by a gelatinous, grayish pulp that holds them together. The flavor is delicately aromatic, sweet to slightly tart, and reminiscent of gooseberries.
Once cut open, granadilla can be eaten with a spoon. In the kitchen, it is most commonly used to make juices and to flavor drinks or sundaes. It is also very tasty in fruit salads, desserts, cocktails, jams, and ice cream.
It contains large amounts of provitamins A, C, and K, as well as phosphorus, iron, and calcium. This type of passionflower is native to the mountainous regions of the Andes—primarily Mexico and Central America.
