Lavender is native to the Mediterranean. This plant, with its purple flowers and gray-green stems, has up to 40 different species, which vary in the quality of their essential oils. The highest-quality oil comes from true lavender, which is grown at altitudes between 800 and 1,300 meters. Broad-leaved lavender thrives at lower altitudes, but its oil is not of such high quality. The most commonly cultivated species is true lavender, which was created by crossing these two species.
The ancient Greeks used lavender as a medicinal herb, whether in the form of bath oil or as a seasoning in dishes. Even today, lavender flowers and the oil extracted from them are used in the production of cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. In addition, the scent of lavender is effective at repelling moths and other pests.
Lavender has a soothing effect on the nerves. It helps with nervous tension, anxiety, insomnia, and headaches. Lavender contains more than 150 chemical compounds, making it a popular plant for aromatherapy. Dried lavender is also placed in cloth sachets, which you can put in your closet to scent your laundry, or under your pillow to help you sleep well. Lavender oil can also help relieve insect bites.
