Also known as kolník, it belongs to the group of root vegetables, it is also grown as a fodder crop and historically replaced potatoes in times of need. In appearance and size, the tubers resemble beetroot, have a white or yellow skin with a purple top.
This vegetable has a sweet, somewhat peppery taste. Turnips are eaten boiled, in soups, sauces and side dishes, young tubers are tasty even raw. However, turnip leaves can also be consumed.
Turnip consists of 90% water, almost no fat, but a large amount of fiber. Its consumption is recommended for diets, as it contains almost no calories. It contains vitamin B, C and calcium, cleanses the blood of uric acid and thus provides relief for people with gout and rheumatic pain. It is easy to grow and also frost-resistant, so it is popular and thrives in the regions of Scandinavia and Russia. However, it originally comes from the Mediterranean, from where it spread further to Europe.
