This fruit is considered by many to be the most delicious in the world. The fruits in the shape of a giant strawberry grow up to 20 cm with a diameter of about 7-10 cm. When ripe, the leathery, soft and as if scaly skin turns from green to brown. Each fruit contains a large number (20-30) of large, dark, flat-drop-shaped seeds that are easy to remove. The seeds are poisonous, contain a high concentration of alkaloids, and are used to make insecticides.
The tasty fruits are harvested unripe and must be allowed to soften before consumption. The flesh is white, creamy to pinkish, buttery soft and tastes like a buttery vanilla dessert. Its taste is also compared to bananas, strawberries and pineapples.
Healthy ripe fruits should be larger and evenly green, or naturally brown brindle, elastic to the touch. It is stored in a cool place (8–12°C), ideally at higher humidity. They ripen at room temperature, then they can be stored briefly in the refrigerator.
They are very sensitive to bruises.
The soft, dense and very sweet pulp of white, cream to pinkish color is consumed. The pulp is also used to make juices, ice cream, jams and other snacks.
Despite its dense consistency, it has a low fat content (about 0.7%), and it also contains vitamin C and other health-promoting substances in smaller quantities. It grows in the mountains of the tropics and subtropics, comes from the Andes, mainly from Ecuador and Peru, today it is also grown in California, Africa, Israel, Egypt and the Mediterranean. It grows at an altitude of 1000–2600 m above sea level.
