Dragon fruit, also known as pitahaya, is the fruit of a cactus that is adorned with large, fragrant flowers. This very tasty exotic fruit is grown in the tropical regions of Asia, primarily in Vietnam, Thailand, and Indonesia, and is considered a tropical “superfood.”

Beneath its bright pink skin lies white or red flesh with small black seeds. In terms of size, the dragon fruit is quite enormous; it can be compared to the size of a human head.

Dragon fruit comes in three main varieties: red skin and red flesh, pink skin and white flesh, and yellow skin and white flesh.

The flesh has a very delicate, slightly sweet flavor reminiscent of watermelon or kiwi. The yellow pitahaya has a stronger flavor, almost like gooseberries. The flesh is low in calories. Along with the flesh, numerous small seeds are also eaten; they have a nutty flavor and are rich in fats.

Dragon fruit has a number of health benefits, including the ability to aid in weight loss. It improves digestion—it’s ideal for proper bowel function and effectively cleanses the body—while also lowering cholesterol levels, strengthening the immune system, and boosting energy levels. Dragon fruit also helps prevent cancer and heart disease and protects the body against bacteria and fungi.

As mentioned earlier, it’s a low-calorie fruit, so it’s ideal for weight loss. The best ways to enjoy this fruit are on its own, in a fruit salad, or as a smoothie:

Pitahaya Smoothie
