Does the name of this apple sound Japanese to you? That’s no coincidence at all—Fuji apples were first grown in 1939 in Japan. They originate from the city of Fujisaki, located on the largest island, Honshu. They were created by crossing the Red Delicious and Virginia Ralls Genet varieties. In Japan, this apple is one of the most popular, and it’s also starting to gain popularity in the Czech Republic.

A Little About the Fuji Apple

This variety is sure to impress you. The Fuji apple is considered one of the best in the world. It’s very juicy and sweet. It has a honey-like flavor and a distinctive aroma that will captivate you. It’s also very refreshing. The flesh is white, firm, and crisp, even long after you take the apple out of the fridge. Its color is also striking; it’s usually pinkish, though you may also find ones with a yellow base and scarlet streaks. In a word, a feast for the eyes.

With Fuji in the Kitchen

Generally speaking, Fuji apples aren’t ideal for baking, precisely because they’re so juicy. That makes them all the better to eat fresh right away—preferably chilled. If you want to use them in recipes, try adding them to salads or a cheese platter. Thanks to their distinctly sweet flavor, they also work well as a topping for cakes—just dice or slice them and simmer them gently on the stove with cinnamon and a little cane sugar.

Health Benefits

Antioxidants

Apples contain natural compounds called flavonoids, which are known for their antioxidant effects. There are over 5,000 different derivatives of these compounds, and their number continues to grow. They are actually pigments found in all plant cells, often alongside vitamin C, which protects against oxidation.

Antioxidants protect our bodies from free radicals, which are molecules containing unstable oxygen that can damage our cells. They also have antibacterial properties and strengthen the body’s overall immune system.

Fiber

Apples are particularly rich in pectin, a type of soluble fiber that helps lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and improves digestive health. A Fuji apple contains 4 to 5 grams of fiber, most of which is found in the peel, so it’s best to eat the apple unpeeled.

Vitamins

In addition to vitamin C, which helps boost the immune system, Fuji apples also contain provitamin A, B vitamins, vitamin E, and folic acid. Provitamin A, also known as beta-carotene, gives the fruit its yellow-orange color and is also a valuable antioxidant that protects cells against premature aging. It also supports healthy vision, boosts the immune system, and helps prevent cardiovascular disease. B vitamins generally improve the quality of the skin, nails, and hair, and also enhance mental resilience. Folic acid is particularly important during pregnancy and contributes to proper fetal development. Vitamin E is a powerful antioxidant that, among other things, lowers LDL cholesterol and prevents blood clots. It thus helps prevent heart attacks and strokes.

Minerals

Apples are rich in calcium, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and magnesium. Together, they contain over 30 minerals and other enzymes that improve our health. With the start of the school year and the arrival of fall, apple consumption increases, which can also benefit your mental health. This is because the phosphorus they contain strengthens mental resilience.

Eating one apple before bed can also have a positive effect on sleep quality, mainly thanks to its vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium content. Vitamin C helps lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels and improves breathing. Potassium stimulates the heartbeat, and vitamin B6 counteracts nervous tension and promotes serotonin production. Together, this combination relaxes your body, allowing you to rest better. By eating apples regularly, you can prevent a number of diseases, such as heart or kidney disease and high blood pressure. Apples boost immunity, mental resilience, and stabilize blood sugar levels. If you’re serious about detoxing, try adding apple cider vinegar to your diet. Drinking it regularly, mixed with water and honey, combats fatigue and stomach problems, aids in weight loss, and improves the quality of your hair and skin.

Fujiko

Fujiko Apple Titbit

Although Fuji apples originate in Japan, they are not exported. The best-tasting apples of this variety are found in China. We import our Fujiko (Titbit’s name for the Fuji apple) from the city of Qixia in Shandong Province. And you can be sure that they truly have a perfect flavor.

Our purchasing department had samples sent from seven different suppliers, allowing us to select the very best. In Europe, Fuji apples are also grown in Italy, but their flavor cannot compare to those from China.
